Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad made Homecoming Day 2014 one to remember as the Lions slashed Felician College, 8-0, for their third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory of the season.
The Lions, after scoring 16 total goals in 18 games a year ago, have matched that total over their last THREE contests (22 overall). The triumph evens GCU's record at 3-3-2 and keeps them unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-1. The Golden Falcons fall to 1-8 (1-4 CACC).
GCU wasted no time in lighting the scoreboard, netting four goals within the first 19 minutes of play.
Ben Vergara (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.) kicked off the highlights with his sixth of the year just 4:45 after the opening whistle.
Emiliano Baquerizo (So.-Guayaquil, Ecuador) followed with his first score as a Lion coming on a corner kick header at 13:46.
Michael Clarke (So.-Essex, UK) proceeded to score goals just 1:19 apart (17:26, 18:45) to provide the home team with a cozy 4-0 first-half lead.
Garrett McVeigh (So.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) assisted on three of the firststanza scores while Clarke and
Brad Golec (So.-Evansville, Ind.) also aided on GCU goals in the period.
It was more of the same in the second frame, starting with
Jorge Rivera's (So.-Brick, N.J.) second of year, coming off a
Joe Esposito (So.-Beachwood, N.J.) corner kick at 58:21. Clarke completed his first career hat trick, and tied his 2013 goal total of seven, when he tickled the twine at 78:22 off another Esposito feed. Freshman
Sean Graham (Toms River, N.J.) joined the party with his first career goal at 82:48 on Golec's second assist of the afternoon before
Eddy Glover (Jr.-Oxford, UK) ended the rout by sinking a penalty kick with 3:57 left in the game (86:03).
Sebastian Mikuska (So.-Augsburg, Germany) improved to 3-0 in the GCU goal and earned his first shutout of the year with four saves in the victory.
Georgian Court takes to the road for its next contest as they travel to Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
