Yarraville, VIC (Australia) - Georgian Court University lacrosse officially went international last week as head coach Michael Migliorisi and five members of his CACC championship squad, Daryl Carr, Lauren Conaty, Angelica Gero, Laura Housel and Christine Latteri, journeyed to Australia to compete in the 2010 Down Under Cup, June 4-6.
After traveling 30+ hours, from New York to Los Angeles to Sydney to Melbourne, the GCU contingency joined forces with players from numerous teams, including opposing members of the CACC, and suited up for USA Red, led by Coach Migliorisi, to play six matches in the three-day tournament.
The USA Red team opened up tournament play on Friday afternoon with a 20-5 victory over USA Blue, the 2009 Down Under champions. Housel, whose career at Georgian Court came to an end last month with a CACC title, netted two goals and tallied three assists in the victory while Carr, a returning senior, also scored for the victors.
USA Red captain and '09 graduate of Fairfield University, Rebecca White, led the offense, tallying four goals and receiving the game's MVP award. Dominican College's Silje Karlsen (Sr.) and Aubree Williams (Jr.) each contributed a goal.
USA Red team took th field again Friday evening and dropped a contest to the Australian U-19 Green National squad, 10-6. Housel and Conaty (Sr.) each posted a goal in the loss. In a game that was a defensive battle, Jackie Trainor, a '08 graduate of Monmouth University ‘08 and current assistant coach for Wilmington University, received the MVP award for her outstanding play.
After sleeping off some of its jet lag, USA Red defeated the Victoria State lacrosse team (and four-time winner of the Down Under Cup), 12-7, Saturday afternoon.
In the night game under torrential conditions, which included 45 degree temperatures and driving rain, USA Red fell to the final game in pool play to the Australian U-19 Gold National squad.
In their first game of the Final Four on Sunday, USA Red topped, yet again, the Victoria State lacrosse team, 7-6. Conaty, a member of the All-CACC First Team, earned the match's MVP award with two goals.
In the tournament final, USA Red dropped a well-balanced affair, 7-5, to the Australian U-19 Green national team. Housel contributed a goal, while Latteri (‘10) was given the MVP Award for keeping her squad in an extremely close game as USA Red's goalkeeper.
