LAKEWOOD, NJ-Georgian Court University Director of Athletics & Recreation,
Laura Liesman, announced today that
Freddy Flores has been hired as the school’s head softball coach.
“Georgian Court University is very excited to have someone of Freddy’s caliber to lead the Lions in 2010 and beyond,” said Liesman. “Coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, it was very important to find a coach that we feel can continue that momentum while leading our student-athletes to the pinnacle of success both on and off the playing field. I feel Freddy is the coach that will do so.”
Flores last coached at Western New Mexico University from 2002-2007 where he was a four-time Coach of the Year. Flores led the Mustangs to three straight PacWest Conference championships (2002-04) and a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship (2007) while also advancing to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division II Women’s Softball Championship. Coincidentally, his club defeated GCU-rival, Caldwell College, 1-0, in the first round of that tournament. He posted an overall record of 260-115-1 (.693) during his tenure.
Freddy, a standout student-athlete at New Mexico Highlands University and member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference all-time team, played parts of six seasons of professional baseball in the independent leagues, most recently with the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League in 2009. He also served as an assistant coach with the now-defunct Atlantic City Surf in 2008.
Flores replaces Jeff Franquet, who resigned in September to accept a similar position at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT.
Freddy, a Silver City, NM native, currently resides in Chesilhurst, NJ with his wife, Heather.
